You don’t have to be Indiana Jones to dive into Istria’s Atlantis!

Just a few metres from the shore and only about 1.5 metres below the sea surface lies a unique underwater interpretation trail featuring the remains of the only known ancient saltworks in Istria, once among the largest on the eastern Adriatic coast.

There is no entrance fee to this museum, and its opening hours are determined by the sea itself. Equipped with a mask and snorkel, or from a transparent-bottom kayak, you can explore the remains of the ancient saltworks, its canal system, millstones and other valuable archaeological finds that bear witness to the wealth and importance of Medulin Bay in Roman times.

The Romans called salt “white gold” and even used it to pay their legionaries (Latin: salarium), which is why the English word salary is derived from the same origin.
